My Version of a Lava Flow

My first taste of a Miami Vice was in Puerto Vallarta. It was just the week before Christmas and my friends and I were on the beach soaking up the sun when this incredibly good looking waiter ( I was there with two other single ladies, so don’t judge me) brought me this wonderful fruity red and white drink. One sip and I was hooked….my new favorite drink!

If you have never had a Miami Vice drink, it’s half pina colada and half strawberry daiquiri. Pretty simple to duplicate. I then ran across a drink called Lava Flow and it seemed very similar to the Vice but was a little creamier. Most of the recipes I found called for banana but banana is not great if you are making up this drink ahead of time. The way I make it, you can mix the two parts separately and keep them in the freezer until you are ready to use. Just thaw until slightly slushy and then scoop into glasses.

I am giving instructions for two glasses of non-alcoholic drinks. You can go here and if want to convert this into ounces or add alcohol. I wanted to be a little more precise with my measurements so I used a measuring cup to measure the liquid ingredients.

Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 6 oz Frozen Strawberries w/ syrup  OR  6 oz Frozen Strawberries  (if you like it a little more tart)
  • Pineapple Juice

Blend strawberries and small amout of pineapple juice to form a smooth paste. Pour the mixture into your glass. Rinse the blender.

  • 1/2 cup Pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup Coco Real (cream of coconut)
  • 1/4 cup Half / Half
  • Crushed Ice

Blend Cream of Coconut, Pineapple Juice, and half/half in a blender with crushed ice until smooth. (I used 5 handfuls of ice) Pour this mixture into the glass over the strawberry mixture which will flow along the sides of the glass creating the “flowing lava” effect.
