How to always have the perfect shade of makeup !

perfect shade makeup

Have you ever walked over to the makeup aisle and scanned the various brands of makeup?  Once you decide on the brand,  you start looking at the various shades, opening them up and rubbing small amounts onto you hand or your face?  You find what you believe to be the correct shade only to find out when you get home that shade didn’t show true under the harsh store lighting.

Makeup is too expensive to just throw away and your skin tone changes throughout the year.  My skin is fairly pale  in the winter and then darkens as summer approaches.  This means that the shade I use in winter needs to be darkened as summer approaches .  This solution to this is simple; mix your makeup to match your  current skin tone.

If you have followed my blog, you know that I am a big couponer.  I buy what’s on sale and make it work. This includes my makeup.  As you can see by the picture above, I have several brands and several shades of makeup.  I didn’t pull these out of some hidden stash, these are the actual bottles/tubes I pulled out of my makeup bag.

makeup 2 (640x501)I start with an clean container that once held makeup.  I have had it for years and clean it after I use up each shade of makeup.  If you don’t have an old makeup jar, just use one of those small Tupperware or Rubbermaid-like containers.  You can get about 3 for $1 at your local dollar store.

First, go pull out all of those bottles of foundation that you have stashed back because they are the wrong shade.  Line them up so you can easily see your options.

You will want to begin with a shade of makeup that you believe to be closet to your current skin tone.  Apply a test section and decide if it needs to be darker or lighter.   To match my skin tone, I began with a darker yellow tone foundation (which was too dark for me) and added a lighter foundation (the smart shade is the white) and a lighter pink tone foundation.

One of my favorite makeup tips  came from a makeup artist that I saw on a morning news show(sorry I can’t remember her name).  She said  to leave the lid off for a couple of days and some of the water will evaporate leaving you with a thicker makeup.  The picture above is the before and the photo below is after I let is sit for about 48  hours.
