Homesteading On One Acre
I ran across this article on homesteading on one acre in the new Mother Earth News. I sit staring at it trying to decided how much of the plan is actually feasible for me. I love to plant and harvest my fruit and vegetables every year and I love canning, freezing, and drying those fruits and vegetables.
It’s the in between that I have a problem with. You know, the dreaded hoeing. I don’t like to hoe and avoid it at all cost. That is probably why I love my square foot garden so much. Don’t get me wrong, there will be plants in the large garden (aka..the work garden) but I actually love working in a smaller, raised bed garden.
I also want to do a more research in an effort to become more self sufficient. There are cows in the pasture, chickens, eggs, fruit and nut trees already in place. I just need to make everything come together and work more efficiently.
In preparation of planting season, I met a friend at our local Farm Store and purchased some seeds. I restrained myself and only purchased what I needed but I wanted to get a little of everything.
Visions of baskets overflowing with vegetables and shelves lined with canned goods danced in my head but thoughts of the dreaded hoeing kept me in check.
I dug out my little garden tools, gloves, and seeds this morning. You may notice that I have a total of 5 gloves and that none of them match. Yep, my gloves have sock syndrome. I always end up with gloves that don’t match. I don’t know how this happens.
Really, every fall I put away matching gloves and by spring, one glove magically disappears. Fortunately I have a couple of gloves for the right hand and a couple for the left hand so I’m good to go.
Have you started planting your garden?
