PLANTS OF ORLANDO (Volcano Bay)

I thought Baldi Resort in Costa Rica was one of the most beautifully landscaped locations that I have ever visited and I am hard to please when it comes to landscaping. I have to say that Volcano Bay in Orlando comes close to Baldi when it comes to plant use and design.

I added a few photos from the park at the bottom of the this post.

TRAVELLERS PALM
  • Zone:    10-11
  • Height & Spread:  30 ft to 50 ft depending on type
  • Light    This tree loves a sunny spot, faring best when exposed to full sun. It can tolerate partial shade, however.
  • Soil      A rich, loamy soil with neutral to mild acidity works best for this plant
  • Water:  The Travelers palm needs soil that remains consistently moist due to its rain forest origins. However, you should be careful not to overwater the plant.
MAMMY CROTON

  • Zone:    10-11
  • Height & Spread:  30 ft to 100 ft depending on type
  • Light    Full sun
  • Soil      A rich, loamy soil with neutral to mild acidity works best for this plant
  • Water:  Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist, but never soggy or waterlogged.
PRINCESS FLOWER
  • Zone:    9-11
  • Height & Spread:  7 ft
  • Light    full to partially sun
  • Soil      A rich, loamy soil with neutral to mild acidity works best for this plant
  • Water:  The princess flower plant needs regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during hot spells in summer, but don’t allow the soil to become soggy

  • Height & Spread: 4-6 ft
  • Light    full to partial shade
  • Soil     Well-draining, moist soil, organic-rich
  • Water:  Keep moist but not soggy

  • Height & Spread: 10 ft
  • Light    Direct sunlight, filter harsh light
  • Soil     Rich soil, fast draining
  • Water:  Average

  • Height & Spread:  3-5 ft
  • Light:  Filtered sun, Full sun, Partial shade, Partial sun
  • Soil:  Well-draining, moist soil, organic-rich
  • Water:  Water regularly – weekly, or more often in extreme heat or containers.

  • Light    Full-partial sun
  • Soil     Well drained
  • Water:  Average-heavy

COONTIE PALM
  • Zone:   8-10
  • Height & Spread:  Reaches 3 to 4 ft. tall and 4 to 5 ft. wide.
  • Light:  Filtered sun, Full sun, Partial shade, Partial sun
  • Soil:  sand or sandy loam well-draining soils. 
  • Water:  Low – Once established, needs occasional watering; more often in extreme heat.
FIRE BUSH
  • Zone:   8-11
  • Height & Spread:  3–15 ft. tall, 2–6 ft. wide
  • Light:  Full sun, partial shade
  • Soil:  Well-drained
  • Water:  very drought-tolerant once it reaches established maturity
AUTOGRAPH TREE
  • Zone:   8-11
  • Height & Spread:  8 to 10 ft. tall and wide, 25 ft. tall as a tree
  • Light:  Full sun
  • Soil:  Sand, clay, loam, well-draining
  • Water:  The autograph tree should be watered regularly for the first year or so until the plant is fully established.
PHILODENDRON
  • Zone:    9-12
  • Height & Spread: Often maintained at 6′ but can get to 12′ tall, 1.5-2′ spread
  • Light    Bright indirect light, limit direct sun to prevent sunburn
  • Soil  Moist, but very well-draining
  • Water:  Keep soil consistently moist but not wet, as needed

  • Height & Spread:  2-3 ft
  • Light:  Partial Sun to Full Sun
  • Soil: well drained – all soil types
  • Water:  Average 
DWARF UMBRELLA TREE & CLUSTERING FISHTAIL PALM

  • Height & Spread:  1′ to 50′ depending on variety and growing location
  • Light    Partial sun preferred, may tolerate full sun in limited conditions
  • Soil  Well-draining potting mix
  • Water:  Keep soil moist but not wet
  • FISHTAIL PALM
  • Zone:   10-11
  • Height & Spread:  30-40 ft
  • Light:  Partial Sun to Full Sun
  • Soil: well drained
  • Water:  Water your palm deeply but less frequently, allowing the plant to dry out between watering and watering more during summer months when it is hot outside.

  • Soil  Fast draining soil but can be grown as air plants
  • Water:  need to put water in the middle of the rosette leaves
BUTTON MANGROVE
  • Zone:   10-11
  • Height & Spread:  12-15 ft
  • Light:    Full sun to light shade
  • Soil:  Wet, sandy to drier, richer soils.  
  • Water:  Drought tolerant
